To mark the conclusion of the exhibitions “Lynn Hershman Leeson: Are Our Eyes Targets?” and “Digital Diaries”, the Julia Stoschek Foundation presents four student positions from the art academies in Düsseldorf and Münster. These emerging artists engage with personal archives, diary formats, and autobiographical fiction.
“Dear Diary” brings together works by Sierra Diamond, Martin Steinfeld, Jessica Tille, and Haiqing Wang that deliberately challenge the boundaries of the private and incorporate everyday material into artistic processes.
Collages made from fragments of daily life, smartphone notes, personal photo albums, and diary entries form the core of these artistic reflections on the practice of self-documentation in our digital society. The works explore themes such as identity construction, self-image and external perception, mechanisms of seeing, body connotations, alter egos, and the transformation of memory in interaction with social environments and their feedback.
The participating artists will explore these questions through readings, lectures, screenings, and drag performances—seeking their own personal responses to issues that Lynn Hershman Leeson began addressing in her work as early as the 1970s, and which resonate even more urgently in today’s digitally networked world. As in the “Electronic Diaries”, the heart of the exhibition, the diary once again becomes a vital tool for self-exploration.
Each work will also be accompanied by a short talk.
