LABOUR is the collaborative project of Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander, whose works center the transformative potential of sound. The evening with LABOUR will begin with a short listening exercise, in which the artist duo guides participants into acoustic space, and an activation of their installation Tower of Silence (2024). This will be followed by an artist talk moderated by Lisa Long, Artistic Director of JSF.
The multisensory installation Tower of Silence references 3,000-year-old Zoroastrian sky burials, where the deceased are placed on open-air platforms (dakhma, or Towers of Silence) to be devoured by vultures, leaving the bones to be dried in the sun. Activated by sound and light, the installation offers participants a meditation on transitory states and liminal spaces. The evening will explore these themes as well as LABOUR’s wider practice, spanning light and sound installations, and spatio-sonic rituals.
