JSF BERLIN: Artist Talk with Theodoulos Polyviou

For the third iteration of Double Feature, artist Theodoulos Polyviou presents the latest chapter of his series Transmundane Economies (2022 – ongoing) in Berlin and Düsseldorf. In this series, Polyviou deploys virtual reality and CGI filmmaking to study, reconstruct, and fill in historical gaps of Cypriot cultural heritage.

At the center of Polyviou’s exhibitions is the culmination of his long-term research: a site-responsive video installation titled A Palace in Exile (2024). The video consists entirely of computer-generated images, which jump between two places and time periods: the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the present and Cyprus in the 1950s, a decade characterized by nationalist tensions in the process of gaining independence from British colonial rule.

In conversation with Line Ajan, Polyviou will discuss the genesis of his research, the role of architecture in postcolonial nation-building, and the use of digital technologies and immersive media as “ceremonial tools”.

A Palace in Exile was produced by Fondazione Elpis in Milan, where it premiered in spring 2023. The video installation is a collaboration with architectural designer Loukis Menelaou, with sound production by x.ypno.

Double Feature, a series of solo presentations that takes place across JSF Berlin and  Düsseldorf simultaneoulsy, is curated by Line Ajan & Lisa Long and supported by Team Global.
