In her documentary !Women Art Revolution (2010), Lynn Hershman Leeson honors the women who have shaped and transformed the art world since the 1960s. The title refers to the collective Women Artists in Revolution (WAR), which fought against gender-based discrimination in the art scene.
Hershman Leeson chronicles the struggle for equality in a male-dominated field. Decades of interviews and archival footage reveal personal stories and insights from artists such as Yvonne Rainer, Maura Reilly, Miriam Schapiro, Nancy Spero, and Martha Rosler. Scenes from the accompanying graphic novel, illustrated by Spain Rodriguez, bring additional depth to the narrative.
The evening begins with an introduction by art and film scholar Elke Kania, M.A.
Accompanying the exhibition “Lynn Hershman Leeson: Are Our Eyes Targets?” in Düsseldorf, the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf is presenting a screening program of the artist’s feature films and documentaries.
