JSF DÜSSELDORF: Screening "Teknolust" by Lynn Hershman Leeson

In this award-winning feature film Teknolust (2002) by media artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson, actress Tilda Swinton embodies Rosetta Stone, a scientist who creates three illegal clones of herself by uploading and replicating her own DNA into her computer.

The three clones, Olive, Ruby and Marine, who differ only in the color of their clothes, now form Rosetta’s family. Together, the scientist and her creations live in isolation in an undefined cyberspace.

Dependent on the absorption of Y chromosomes, Ruby begins to seduce men at random in order to capture the urgently needed serum for herself and her sisters. The men who come into contact with Ruby are infected with a computer virus and suffer impotence or allergic reactions. However, their excursions into reality and their consequences do not go undetected and the FBI begins to investigate. The sisters gradually begin to take on a life of their own in the real world and Ruby falls in love with Sandy, a lonely copy-store employee.

With an introduction by Darija Šimunović, research assistant at the Imai Foundation.

Accompanying the exhibition “Lynn Hershman Leeson: Are Our Eyes Targets?” in Düsseldorf, the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Düsseldorf is presenting a screening program of the artist’s feature films and documentaries.
